OBJECTIVE 7

Information Literacy Curriculum

ARTIFACT: SLAMM Lesson Plan

REFLECTION:

Have you ever wanted to live on another planet? Can you find a travel agent to tell you all about it? Look no further! This sixth grade science class will create commercials about the characteristics of the planets that will entice vacationers as well as those who don't even like to travel! This lesson, created in a format suggested by the professional journal School Library Media Monthly, incorporates technology, the sixth grade science curriculum, and the sixth grade persuasive writing curriculum. The students will have the opportunity to locate, retrieve and handle print and non-print resources while working cooperatively to research planetary characteristics within print materials and appropriate websites. The students create scripts and storyboards in order to persuade others to visit the planet. And then the fun begins. With the media specialist's guidance, they record and edit the commercials using video cameras and editing software on the computers. Information literacy skills such as evaluating and organizing information, creatively presenting information and operating media technology are taught and reinforced. What a fun way for students to access technology, analyze the information that they research and then present it at the end! I hope space travel can keep up with this class!
