OBJECTIVE 12

Managing Program Resources: Human, Financial, Physical

ARTIFACT: Mentor Paper & Volunteer Brochure

REFLECTION:

Throughout the past three years, I have had the wonderful experience of assisting a fabulous media specialist in a Howard County middle school. This media specialist has provided me with resources and tools to use for when I, too, am a media specialist. The Mentor Paper is a questionnaire that the media specialist and I completed in response to an assignment for SLM 501/Administration. This paper serves three purposes. First, the paper addresses issues that allow me to apply management principles and practices that relate to the financial and operational aspects of a media program. Second, as the media specialist and I were hired simultaneously, the paper documents the media program that I have assisted in establishing as the media assistant for this school. Lastly, this document presents a guide that I will use while developing my own principles and practices in my future role as media specialist. This paper focuses on beginning of the year procedures that will help me organize my time and resources. It focuses on budgetary issues and presents suggestions for managing the media funds and accounts. It also helps to establish the accessible and physical layout of the media center. The Volunteer Brochure that I created further reinforces the role I have had in working with media personnel. As we "hire" student media aides and parent volunteers, I provide them with the paper version of this document so that they are aware of the policies and procedures we follow in the media center. I am grateful for the resources and tools provided to me to manage the program resources. These resources and tools pave the road to a successful media program.
