D. PUBLISH USING INTERNET EXPLORER

CONNECT TO THE STUDENT SERVER

1. Open Internet Explorer

2. In the address bar, key in:

ftp://student.mcdaniel.edu

3. Hit Enter

You should see a LOG ON AS box Figure 5D-1.

4. Enter username and NEW password

5. Click on LOG ON

You should then see your account with an folder called public_html (Figure 5D-2)


6. Double click on public_html to open the folder

7. Navigate in your computer (via My Computer) to the folder where your Web files are located

8. Drag and drop the FOLDER (that contains your Web pages and all associate files) from your PC to INSIDE the public_html folder

In Figure 5D-3 below, I selected the folder "portfolio" from MY DOCUMENTS, then dragged it to the open window (inside the folder public_html) and let go.

Figure 5D-4 below shows the results of the drag and drop.

VIEW IN WEB BROWSER (URL)

1. Open a New Window in Internet Explorer (or open Netscape if you have that).

It will be easy here to get confused using IE as a Web Browser and IE as an FTP application.

In the instructions above, we used IE as an FTP application.

Now, we are going to use IE as a Web Browser.

2. In the address box of IE, key in:

http://student.mcdaniel.edu/~username/folder/page.htm

where:

  • username stands for your username (such as sak000)
  • "folder" stands for the name of your folder (such as portfolio)
  • "page" stands for the name of your page (such as home.htm)

For example, for the files in the above illustration, I would key in:

http://student.mcdaniel.edu/~sak000/portfolio/home.htm

EASY STUMBLES

Make certain you do not upload files outside of the folder public_html.

EVERY file and subfolder you publish to the Web must be inside public_html.
The folder "public_html" does not appear in the URL. It is a part of the publishing path, but it is not a part of the URL location.

The tilde ("~" top left of keyboard) must be placed in front of the username for the URL to work.

    • You use the tilde for the URL in the browser (Netscape or IE)
    • You do NOT use the tilde when FTPing.
Your Web pages will NOT work if you have a space in a folder or file name. Remember, do NOT use spaces in your file names.

NOTE: Folders and subfolders are "between the slashes" in the URL. For instance, the URL for "report_01.htm" inside the folder docs_report would be:

http://student.mcdaniel.edu/~sak000/portfolio/docs_report/report_01.htm
