Our Collection
~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Our Media Center collection contains more than 12,000 items available for circulation, including books, magazines, and videos. Students in grades K through 2 are permitted to check out 2 items at a time. Students in grades 3 through 5 may check out 3 items. Items can be checked out or returned anytime during the day, in addition to the regulary scheduled Media time. Parents are encouraged to check out items from our collection as well. Use our OPAC machine to find a great book, or ask Mrs. Jones to recommend a favorite!

So, how do I find
all of these great books?

Well ...

There are many things to consider when I decide which books to order for our collection. Many of the books that have been included in the collection are a result of students and teachers asking for a favorite title. Some books are here because they relate to and support what the students are learning in their classrooms. Many of the books were recommended by other teachers and librarians. I found out about these books by reading many professional journals that are written specifically for media specialists, including School Library Journal, the Horn Book Guide, and Booklist. When I see books that were given a good rating, and I know they will be appealing to the members of our school or support a grade-level subject, I add them to my order list. Please feel free to ask me about ordering one of your favorite books that we don't already have in our collection!

In addition to our fiction and non-fiction books, our media center collection also contains subscriptions to 27 magazines for students and 5 journals for teachers. [Click here for the list of titles.] In order to find an item you are interested in, you can use one of our 8 OPAC stations to search for the item by subject, title, or author. Each computer can be used to search our collection, or to run useful programs such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Power Point, and Kidspiration. We have access to the Internet, including our two online databases, at each station as well. If you are planning to use the items in our media collection to complete a research project, be sure to read through our Research Handbook for help!
