Requirements for a Major or Minor in German

A minimum of forty hours (40) is required, including courses numbered 1101,1102, 2211, 2212, 3301, 3302, 3320, and 4410. (4410 must be taken at McDaniel College.) The total number of hours may be reduced by placement.

In order to complete a major in German, students must either live for one year in the German House on campus or Study Abroad in a German-speaking country for at least one semester.

• German 1101: Elementary German I (4 credits)
• German 1102: Elementary German II (4 credits)
  • or German 1103: Elementary German for Advanced Beginners (equiv. of GER 1101 & 1102)
• German 2211: Intermediate German I: Language and Culture (4 credits)
• German 2212: Intermediate German II: Conversation and Composition (4 credits)
• or any other German 2000-level course
• Students may choose to take a culture course taught in English among the following offerings:
• German 1111: German Cinema (4 credits), or
  
• German 1125: From the Holocaust to German Unification (4 credits), or
  
• German 1131 Culture of German-Speaking Countries (4 credits).
• or a course taught in another department if the course is exclusively about German-speaking countries
  • Note: Only one course taught in English may count toward the minor. At least one 3000-level course. (4 credits)
• German 3301 Introduction to the Study of German Literature I
• German 3302 Introduction to the Study of German Literature II
• 3320 German/English Translation
  • or any other German 3000-level course
• GER 4410 (4 credits)(This course must be taken at McDaniel College.)
• One additional German course (4 credits)
• One semester spent studying abroad in a German-speaking, or one year residence in German house on campus.

• GER 1101, 1102 or GER 1103
• One course taught in English among the following: GER 1111, 1125, 1131, or a course exclusively about German-Speaking countries in another Department.
• GER 2211, 2212 or any 2000 level course
• GER 2221, 3331
• One additional 3000-level German course
• GER 4410 (this course must be taken at McDaniel College).
• Study abroad in a German-speaking country for a semester, or live for one year in the German suite.
