  Reflection

Only one "No". When I mailed eleven invitations to members of the school community to become part of a Media Advisory Committee, I felt certain that there would be several people who would decline. It was with much joy and a little surprise that I found myself heading a committee of ten other people. Establishing, working with, and implementing the ideas of a media advisory committee is an example of "collaborating with teachers and administrators" to develop an efficient and effective media program. During our meetings, we evaluated the current media program using the Standards for School Library Media Programs in Maryland. Once the evaluation was complete, we developed a list of targets for improvement and then set goals for meeting these targets. For example, one of the goals for this year is to modify the use of a particular bin of books. The books that were occupying the bin have been reshelved and I am awaiting the arrival of different materials to house in the vacated bin. By collaborating with others in the school community, I am able to assure that the media program "aligns resources, services and information literacy standards with the school's goals and objectives." This is critical since each one of the eleven members of the committee really represents nearly forty students, and every one is important.
