1.  If you have a student whose primary language is something other than English (ESOL), then using a translation program may help that student with comprehension.  For example, if he/she does not understand the a passage that focuses on the term "amendment" in social studies, he/she can use a translation program to overcome the language barrier and focus on the meaning of the text.

2.  As a teacher, if you are making contact with a parent whose primary language is something other than English, whether through letters or meetings, a translation program would enable both parties involved to better communicate information about the student's progress. 

3.  Teachers/students may come across websites that may possible be useful, but is written in another language besides English, a translation program would be helpful.  For example, if a teacher finds a website about the samurai in Japan that is written in Japanese, the text can easily be translated into English through a translation program.

4.  Teachers and students in a foreign language class could use a translation program for many purposes.  For example, the teacher could have students attempt to translate a passage written in Spanish and then use the translator to check their answers. 

5.   Finally, teachers could use a translator as a supplement to instruction in ANY class.  If a social studies class is in the middle of a unit on Medieval China, the teacher could give them a short list of phrases in English to translate into Chinese.  Students connected with a penpal in Saudi Arabia can translate their letters into Arabic to send.
