Seeing Both Sides of....
Gun Control
In today's activity, you will be visiting websites for groups
in support of and against gun control laws in America. Remember, everyone is entitled to
their own opinions.
Directions
1) Open a blank word document and answer answer the following
questions in a short paragraph. How much do you know about gun control
laws? Do you have strong feelings for or against gun control?
2) Visit these websites.
The
Brady Campaign - 10/23/05 http://www.bradycampaign.org/facts/issues/?page=loop
The
National Rifle Association: Fables & Myths -
10/23/05 http://www.nraila.org/media/misc/fables.html
Mrs. Hopper's Tip: You do not
need to read all of the
website; read enough until you feel you can accurately summarize the
contents of the page.
3) Answer the following questions
in the Word Document you have started. You will use your answers
tomorrow in a group activity.
Independent Questions
1) Which website out of the two do you think is better organized and
formatted?
2) Do you think either of the sites represents a bias?
3) Briefly summarize the Brady Campaign's argument in the webpage you
viewed. (2 sentences)
4) In what year was the first gun law passed?
5) Cite one statistic listed on the website in support of their
argument.
6) Briefly summarize the NRA's argument in the webpage you viewed. (2

7) What do they define as "advocacy science"?
8) Cite one statistic listed on the website in support of their

9) Now that you have read more about both sides of the issue, have your
feelings changed? If so, how? Discuss your answers with your partner.
