Web Dropin - Current Events

The Internet is a great resource for finding the latest news from a wide variety of sources. Students your age have current events right at your fingertips. In order to fully take advantage of the news on the Web, you need to be able to read and comprehend important information, and to  summarize it.

When you read current events, you are reading for information. For specific reading strategies to use for this type of reading, see the resources link below.

Activity and Assignment

1. Read an important news story of the day using the Scholastic News Zone website at the bottom of this webpage. You may be assigned a specific story, or perhaps you will select one yourself.
2. You will complete a Current Events Organizer following the reading. You may re-read the story to look for specific information to complete the organizer. As you read, look for information that will answer the questions:

3. You will write a summary of the the article in no less than 5 sentences. Use the back of the organizer for your summary, or use a separate sheet of paper.
4. Discuss the article you read with others.
5. Congratulate yourself on being an informed citizen!
