Frequently Asked Questions
About Computers on Campus

I will be living in a residence hall on campus and am wondering whether I should bring a computer to school?

You will find having a computer in your room is very convenient, but if you are unable to bring a computer to school, you will be able to use the general-access computing labs on campus.

What kind of computer should I bring?

You may bring either a Windows machine or a Macintosh. To access the network from a residence hall, the machine must have a network card (10/100 Twisted Pair Ethernet). If you bring a Windows machine, we recommend a computer that is running Windows 98, 2000 or XP. If you purchase a new Windows computer, please see additional information on recommended computer configuration. If you bring a Macintosh computer, we recommend a computer that is running System 9.1 or above.

I will be living off-campus, but I want to buy a computer to have at home. Do the same recommendations you made for the resident student apply to me?

Make sure you buy a computer WITH A MODEM if you want to connect to the network from your computer at home.

Can I buy a computer through the school?

We are currently working with Omni Tech Corporation, a hardware vendor, to sell Windows computers to our students at an educational rate. If you want to take a look at these quality desktops, point your browser to www.omnitechcorp.com. Log into the Ozone with the ID of 'wmdc' and Password of 'student.' Students can also get an educational discount when they buy a computer directly from Apple Computer (www.apple.com)

Christine Mathews, the Director of Information Technology, will be happy to advise you on the purchase of computers and computing equipment. Her number is 410-857-2542 or you may reach her via e-mail at cmathews@wmdc.edu

What kind of software should I have on my computer?

We suggest you have the same standard software that is on the computers in the labs. Then it will be much easier if you need to work in the lab or print to one of the laser printers.

Windows computers: Microsoft Office 2000 or XP

Macintosh computers: Microsoft Office 2001 for OS 9 or Microsoft Office 10 for OS 10

Where should I buy the software?

If the software is not already on your computer, the College Bookstore sells software at great educational prices. They keep some software in stock, but will order software if they do not have it. You can call the Bookstore at 410-857-2277.

Can I connect to the campus network from a computer in my room?

Yes. We now have Ethernet connections from the residence halls. You will need a network card (10/100 Twisted Pair Ethernet) and a 25 foot ethernet cable. The cables are available at the college bookstore.

What kinds of things will I be able to do when I am connected to the campus network?

You will be able to access your e-mail (all current students may have an account here at WMC), search the collection at the Hoover Library, and get on the Internet.

I will be living off-campus, but I would still like to access the network from home. Can I do that?

Yes. Current undergraduate students may dial directly into the network. You will need a computer WITH A MODEM at home. If you will be living within the local calling area, you will be making a local call to access the network. However, if you will be living outside of the local calling area, you may want to consider an alternative method of connecting to the Internet.

What computing lab facilities are available on campus?

We have eight computing labs on campus. All have access to the World Wide Web. They are:

Charlson Lab in Hoover Library - (24-hour access during regular semester) - a mixture of Windows (22 computers) and Macs (4 computers)
The Margaret Denman-West Technology Center in Hoover Library - all Windows computers
The Writing Center in Hill Hall - all Windows computers
The Windows Lab in Lewis Hall - all Windows computers
The Graphics Lab in Peterson Hall - all Macs
The Howard Hughes Biology Lab in Lewis Hall - all Macs
The Math/Computer Science Lab in Lewis Hall - all Macs
The Physics Lab in Lewis Hall - all Windows

Hours for these labs are posted.

How do I get a college Internet account?

When you  go to the Forum to register for your classes on Guidance Day, you  will be given a Student Internet Account form by your Faculty Representative. Fill out the form and give it to the Registrar Staff when you process your schedule or place it in the designated box. Your account will be created and ready for you to pick up  when you come to campus for your first semester.

Where do I go to pick up my account?

Come to the Information Technology offices in Decker Student Center. We are lcated next to the Post Office. Be sure to bring your student ID with you.

Will my friends at other schools be able to find my college e-mail address?

It will be available on the college's web site unless you indicated otherwise on your account application form.

What software is available for e-mail on the computer lab machines?

Students use Pine by running a telnet session on the e-mail server. Web e-mail is also available.
