SLM521- Dropin# 4

Who’s On Board?

A web drop-in for 4th graders!

Intro: Lord Baltimore and the Calvert family had a dream to bring the English settlers, who were unhappy with how things were going in England, over to the New World. The King of England did not allow his people to choose their religion freely, but that was just one reason why people were angry. Farmers also lost their land to rich gentlemen.

They set sail in two ships, the Ark and Dove, in 1633. They found the perfect spot in land above Virginia and decided to build their colony. We know this today as Maryland.

Who were the colonists? They were not the first people to go to the new world, but they were adventurous. Why did Lord Baltimore choose them to come on the ships? What type of jobs did they perform? What did they wear?

Activity: Compare and contrast the two places.

If you lived in England back then, would you want to leave and start a new life in Maryland? What happened if you stayed? Write a 1 page essay in a Word document that states:

1. If you would step on the ship or not   2. Three reasons why or why not

Check this out! Before making your final decision, look at these sites. Bon Voyage!
