– When researching information, it helps to know what
is the best tool to get you the information you’re looking for.
These should help!

Journal
Article Review – I read
an article from a library journal and wrote a review on what I found. You can
read that here, as well as a response to a colleague’s article review.

Web Link
Bibliography – This is a list of links created for use at a 4th
grade computer center. Links are grouped by content area and will be added as
suggestions are made, sites are discovered, and resources are created.

Course Module – If you are
curious about Internet lingo, want to brush up on your net slang, or just want
to know what on earth you students mean when they tell you “BRB”
before running out of the class, this is the module for you. I created this
module for teachers to learn more about Internet slang and how to educate
students on using it appropriately and accurately.

Web Dropins
Dropin 1 – This activity
allows students to explore the genre of bibliography through a link to
Biographies For Kids. Students click on the hyperlink,
explore the website, and answer a series of questions.
Dropin 2 – This activity
allows students to investigate a recent news article published in Time For Kids regarding making school vending machine snacks
healthier. Students click on the TFK image hyperlink, read the article, then write a persuasive essay regarding the removal of the
school snack.
Dropin 3 – This activity
allows students to investigate biomes and ecosystems of the world through a
link to the Missouri Botanical Gardens homepage. Students interpret data from
graphs and maps in order to learn more about a chosen ecosystem.
Dropin 4 – This activity
allows students to compare information from two websites by exploring the
official websites for children’s authors Avi and Judy Bloom. Students
gather information about the author’s life, influences, and
accomplishments as well as examples of their published works.
Dropin 5 – This activity
allows students to research famous Americans and organize the information they
collect onto a timeline. Students select a historic figure from a list of
biographies from the Library of Congress. They record significant dates in the
life of their figure and represent the information on a timeline.

Elective Instructional Activities
Instruction
Teacher-Made
Web Sites – After exploring a number of teacher-made web sites, I chose
two sites to evaluate. I gave three commendations and three recommendations for
each site and used the activity for ideas in designing my own class website.
Collaboration – These online
collaborative projects are ideal opportunities for students, specifically in 4th
grade, to work together with students, teachers, and professionals from across
the country and around the globe in shared learning experiences.
Worksheets for
Instruction – Why make worksheets from scratch when such a wide variety of
resources are available to teachers online? This module explores a number of
instructional worksheet sites for content areas in the 4th grade
curriculum.
Virtual
Fieldtrips – Want to take your students to far off places but lack the
budget? These virtual fieldtrips may be the ticket! All four field trips are
appropriate for use with the 4th grade curriculum and can provide
hours of fun, engaging education in the comforts of your own classroom.
Communication
Moderating
Discussion – I moderated our Pondering Cats group discussion on Standards 3
and 9 of the Information Literacy Standards for Student Learning. I was asked
to keep the discussion going by asking critical questions, commenting on points
made, and summarizing the discussion in order to share our thoughts with the
rest of the class.
Key Pals – Key Pals and
e-Pals are interactive activities involving collaboration or communication via
email between the
students of your classroom and other students, schools, or
experts from around the globe. I’ve listed five instructional activities
for use with e-Pals in addition to two great websites for use with e-Pals or to
help get your class started in an e-Pal project.
Email – Most of our
students already have a lot of experience using email, but, having never been
taught how to use email appropriately, they may not know how to communicate
effectively via email. This is a list of 10 essential steps to remember when
communicating via email.
Utilities
Translation – In this activity,
I explored a number of text translation websites, suggested several
instructional situations in which the sites could be used, and demonstrated the
use of one website by composing a sentence and translating it to German and
Portuguese.
Viruses – Wondering what
made your hard drive disappear before your eyes? Curious
about computer viruses and why they’ve become such a threat? Tired
of getting hoax emails informing you of new viruses and instructing you to
forward the email to masses of friends? This is a 4th grade-appropriate
explanation of computer viruses and email virus hoaxes that should answer a
couple of your queries.
Legal
Plagiarism – This is a handout
for elementary school teachers on how to detect and prevent acts of plagiarism
in student work. Although plagiarism is not typically a problem in elementary
schools, it is vital to teach children about plagiarism as they learn different
ways to access information through the Internet.
Filtering
–
In this activity, I attempted to lay out the pros and cons of Internet filters.
Most, if not all, schools have active filtering software on their computers,
but how effective is this software and what is the main purpose of using
Internet filtering programs. This should answer your questions!
Multimedia
Sounds – Why not make
learning more interesting by allowing students to read and hear the information they’re researching?! In this activity,
students research animals on the National Geographic Kids website in order to
stump their classmates at a game of “Who am I?”.
Miscellaneous
Safety – It is not only
important t teach students about safe practices on the Internet, it is vital
for them to understand and agree to a set of safety rules for school Internet
use. I’ve developed a student agreement as well as a parent letter
regarding safety on the web.
