Elective Instructional Activities

Instruction

Teacher-Made Web Sites – After exploring a number of teacher-made web sites, I chose two sites to evaluate. I gave three commendations and three recommendations for each site and used the activity for ideas in designing my own class website.

Collaboration – These online collaborative projects are ideal opportunities for students, specifically in 4th grade, to work together with students, teachers, and professionals from across the country and around the globe in shared learning experiences.

Worksheets for Instruction – Why make worksheets from scratch when such a wide variety of resources are available to teachers online? This module explores a number of instructional worksheet sites for content areas in the 4th grade curriculum.

Virtual Fieldtrips – Want to take your students to far off places but lack the budget? These virtual fieldtrips may be the ticket! All four field trips are appropriate for use with the 4th grade curriculum and can provide hours of fun, engaging education in the comforts of your own classroom.

Communication

Moderating Discussion – I moderated our Pondering Cats group discussion on Standards 3 and 9 of the Information Literacy Standards for Student Learning. I was asked to keep the discussion going by asking critical questions, commenting on points made, and summarizing the discussion in order to share our thoughts with the rest of the class.

Key Pals – Key Pals and e-Pals are interactive activities involving collaboration or communication via email between the  students of your classroom and other students, schools, or experts from around the globe. I’ve listed five instructional activities for use with e-Pals in addition to two great websites for use with e-Pals or to help get your class started in an e-Pal project.

Email – Most of our students already have a lot of experience using email, but, having never been taught how to use email appropriately, they may not know how to communicate effectively via email. This is a list of 10 essential steps to remember when communicating via email.

Utilities

Translation – In this activity, I explored a number of text translation websites, suggested several instructional situations in which the sites could be used, and demonstrated the use of one website by composing a sentence and translating it to German and Portuguese.

Viruses – Wondering what made your hard drive disappear before your eyes? Curious about computer viruses and why they’ve become such a threat? Tired of getting hoax emails informing you of new viruses and instructing you to forward the email to masses of friends? This is a 4th grade-appropriate explanation of computer viruses and email virus hoaxes that should answer a couple of your queries.

Legal

Plagiarism – This is a handout for elementary school teachers on how to detect and prevent acts of plagiarism in student work. Although plagiarism is not typically a problem in elementary schools, it is vital to teach children about plagiarism as they learn different ways to access information through the Internet.

Filtering – In this activity, I attempted to lay out the pros and cons of Internet filters. Most, if not all, schools have active filtering software on their computers, but how effective is this software and what is the main purpose of using Internet filtering programs. This should answer your questions!

Multimedia

Sounds – Why not make learning more interesting by allowing students to read and hear the information they’re researching?! In this activity, students research animals on the National Geographic Kids website in order to stump their classmates at a game of “Who am I?”.

Miscellaneous

Safety – It is not only important t teach students about safe practices on the Internet, it is vital for them to understand and agree to a set of safety rules for school Internet use. I’ve developed a student agreement as well as a parent letter regarding safety on the web.
