Instruction Modifications

Teaching ADHD/Hearing Impaired Children

ADHD

Strategies for the ADHD child-

1.     Simplify instruction-basic one and two

2.     Break it down-assignments-one at a time

3.     Need one on one from the teacher

4.     Need to take many breaks-allow them to

5.     Pair them up with a classmate who is doing very well with the computer

6.     Allow them to write down questions as they go along in the lecture and they may ask them at the end

7.     Need extra help and tutoring-provide it

8.     Have a computer up front- away from door, window, heater, AC and any other distractions

9.     Daily assignment log for them to write it down on the computer

10. Test their knowledge on the computer not their attention span or how fast they can type

Hearing Impaired

Strategies for the Hearing Impaired Child-

1.     Need to have lots of visual on the computer

2.     Visit a computer lab first and explain to them this is what we will be working on. Helps that they can see it.

3.     Practice over and over with them when given an assignment especially if a long one

4.     Have one step directions

5.     Have an interpreter that is well educated on the computer and internet

6.     Have an experimental base about the internet before being able to perform the tasks

7.     Extra time for completing assignments

8.     Sit up front-no distractions and supervise their transitions

9.     Repeat back the assignments to them at least twice. Have visuals if possible

10. Use films or videos that educate one on the Internet and they can watch them at home too

This was a great assignment for me. I have ADHD and I have had it since I was ten. I have so much trouble understanding all this information in this class. So now I know what I can do to help my students learn with ADHD! I love working with special need children because I was one of them.
