2.      Understand dance as a way to create and communicate meaning

National Standards of Physical Education

1.      Use a variety of basic and advanced movement forms

2.      Use movement concepts and principles in the development of motor skills

Introduction:

Students are going to discover movement patterns that express information about the human body. They will work in pairs and than in a small group of four. They will make movement choices that communicate they have an understanding of their bodies and how they work. They will make inquires through movement to learn the way their body system interact and function.

Discussion Questions:  If you would like to research about the human body or dance, there are some websites listed below to help you with this assignment.

                                                            http://www.pecentral.org  and http://www.educationindex.com/physed/

Some things you may want to research for this assignment are: major systems of the human body and their function, creative movement, dance, energy, space and time.

Activity:  The students will begin with a basic warm up modeled by their teacher. The teacher will talk about the heart, lungs, muscle fibers, stomach and the digestion system. After completing the warm up students will be divided up into pairs. In the pairs students will talk about two major systems of the human body (circulatory, respiratory, nervous system, digestive and muscular-skeletal). They will be asked to perform a dance involving these two systems. Lastly, they will join another pair and perform a dance movement using the four systems.

Example: Use words like beat, inhale, push, and float as you are warming up. Try mirrored images where the partners face each other. Repeat the words above with one partner performing the word and other partner doing the mirror image. This is a good way to practice to see if any improvement needs to be made. Lastly, they will put it all together into one movement lasting about 3-5 minutes.

Assessment- They will be judged by the teacher on how they participate in the activity. Are they working and contributing with their partner? Are they enthusiastic? Are they mirroring?  When put into the small group to perform they will be evaluated on the following rubric. They will be graded as a group.

Scale of 1-4

1-     No Effort

2-     Little Effort- (moving but not using the words or motions that match the body system)

3-     Medium Effort (same as two but communicating with their partner)

4-     Outstanding Effort- (same as two and three but maximizing the dance, adding something a little extra)

Evaluate on

  1. Artistic expression
  2. Curriculum Contact
  3. Effort
  4. Visual Design
  5. Organization/Structure

Submission- The 10th grade Physical Education class with have three days to come up with their movement routine including two major systems of the body. On Thursday in class they will perform their routine in front of the teacher and other classmates. The total number of points one can receive is 20.

0-8 points-F

9-11 points-D

12-14 points-C

15-17 points-B

18-20 points-A

Grades will be handed out the next day.
