Reflection: It’s that time of year again – the Biography Report is due for the 6th grade Reading students! I met with the teachers to discuss the project, and found them pulling out worn pages from their planning books, depicting the same old, tried and true biography lesson. It looked to me like it was time to spice things up a bit. I asked them if they were interested in having students use more resources than just one individual book on the famous person of choice. I showed them the many different resources we had available in our Collected Biography section, as well as the online databases we had purchased. I also showed them some website links that would work well for their student searches. They were interested in revising their lesson and we worked together to develop the Biography Research Pathfinder. We included the AGOPP method as well as links for the online databases purchased for our school for home use. We also linked appropriate websites that could provide additional information for student research. We placed the pathfinder on our website for easy access. The pathfinder was introduced to the students about two weeks after they had read a book about their famous person and was greeted with great enthusiasm. After evaluating the student products, the teachers and I agree that by using the pathfinder the students were able to locate and identify more resources, and thereby enrich their final product. |
