Standard 3: Collaboration and Leadership

The School Library Media Specialist will serve as a link between the school community and public resources and establish herself as a leader on school committees, in collaborative efforts with teachers, and in professional associations.

Objective: Educational Leader

Indicator: Candidates translate for the school the ways in which the library program can enhance the school improvement efforts.

Reflection:

NCLB. MSA. HSA. AYP. These acronyms are familiar to Maryland public school teachers and we are often asked how we will be involved in our school improvement plan. As a media specialist and a teacher to all students in the school, I am no exception. All staff members are responsible to follow and support our School District’s “Call to Action” plan. The plan includes 4 goals: Ensure success for every student, Provide an effective instructional program, Strengthen productive partnerships for education, Create a positive environment in a self-renewing organization. My school administrators asked each of the staff members on the leadership team to provide an outline of what we do to support this plan. The media center supports our “Call to Action” plan in many ways. I shared with my administration a chart that lists what we do to support each of these goals. In this format, it was clear that we, as media specialists, provide support to the school improvement plan in many ways. My administrators and other members of the leadership team clearly see how vital a good media center program is in supporting our school improvement efforts.
