Standard 1: Use of Information and Ideas

The School Library Media Specialist will teach and encourage ethical and efficient research behavior.

Objective: Access to Information

Indicator: Candidates identify means of providing remote access to information

Reflection:

A busy library is a happy library. Unless, of course, it is your class that can only squeeze in one day of research on the Africa project because other classes are scheduled for lessons throughout the next two weeks. Do you tell your students to visit the media center before and after school or during lunch? Do you allow students to check out all the reference materials? Do you extend the project deadline and try to swap days with the 6 th graders biography projects?

To help alleviate the scheduling problem faced by our busy media center, we purchased online databases with home use logins. Students and staff are given a handout with the database URL, logins, and passwords, allowing them to access information from home or any computer with internet accessibility. Pathfinders are also created to help direct students to specific databases, which discourages the use of random internet searches, a true time-waster when deadlines are looming. Providing home access to online databases does not accommodate all students, but it does allow remote access to information when the media center itself is not available.
