Selection Criteria

Falcon Ridge Media Center Selection Policy follows the MCPS guidelines available online at: http://www.mcps.k12.md.us/curriculum/science/forms/iibra.pdf

In addition, I choose materials based on the following criteria:

  • Is the book an American Library Association award winner?
  • (Michael L. Printz, Margaret A. Edwards, ALA Notable Lists are some of the awards examined)

  • Is the material free of gender and multicultural bias and stereotypes?
  • How will the material compliment our diverse, multicultural collection?
  • Does the material contribute to a student's learning?
  • Is the readability appropriate for Falcon Ridge?
  • Is the material age-appropriate for Falcon Ridge?
  • Does this material fill a need in our media center?
  • Has a student or teacher requested this material?
  • Is the binding of the book tough enough for students?
  • Is the author one of those whom students love?
  • Has the book received positive reviews in School Library Journal, Voice of Youth Advocates, Booklist, on Carol Hurst’s Literature Site or in another authoritative review journal?
  • Are the elements of the book well constructed?
  • plot, theme, setting, character, style and point of view

  • Is the cover appealing?
  • Does the book acquaint students with our rich, diverse literary heritage?
  • Has the material been previewed by a staff member or the Media Specialist?
