Standard 4

Standard #2:  Teaching & Learning

Objective:  Knowledge of Learners & Learning

The SLM program at McDaniel teaches as one of its core philosophies that students have diverse learning styles, abilities and needs. The lesson “A Video & Mr. Dewey” was designed for ESOL students with this philosophy in mind. The goal of this lesson is for students to become familiar with the Dewey Decimal system. To begin, students access, evaluate and use the information gathered. The end product is a video, produced by the students, in which they portray famous people who discuss where a book would be found in a library. A student, for example, might be Bill Gates, discussing that books on MSOffice would be found in the 000-099 Dewey section. Throughout their work, students strive for excellence on worksheets, posters and videotapes, and model ethical behavior in using copyright free music. Students have a chance to give input that reflects their interests in the content of their scripts, in the characters they choose to represent the individual sections of the Dewey Classification System, and in the jobs they perform in the videotaping. They use paper and pencil, books, computer word processing, online research databases, TV camera and editing equipment. They work individually and in groups. Therefore, students have the chance to learn by seeing, listening, touching and moving. At the end, the various worksheets are graded and tabulated according to each ESOL teacher’s standards and rubrics, linking the information skills instruction to their achievement. Since the ESOL program brings together students from many cultures and races, these students will be excellent representatives of the diverse population of their school in the final videotape which will be used as part of the library orientation.
