Standard 2

Standard 4

Standard #2:  Teaching & Learning

Objective:  Information Literacy Curriculum

McDaniel’s SLM program has emphasized the necessity of integrating the Information Literacy Standards into subject area curriculum. Also emphasized is the importance of using technology in teaching these standards and the necessity for Media Specialists to instruct students in the use of this technology. I have attempted to model this philosophy in my artifact. “A Video and Mr. Dewey” integrates the information literacy curriculum and the ESOL curriculum. Students access, evaluate and use information about the Dewey Decimal System to produce a video. In creating the video script students practice writing skills, such as simple sentence and paragraph construction, that are part of the ESOL curriculum. Several other information literacy standards are incorporated into the lesson. Students must practice ethical behavior related to copyright laws by using music and graphics that are copyright free. To complete the worksheets and to produce the video, students must access information provided by online computer databases. Throughout the entire lesson, the Media Specialist is available to assist the students in using the computers and video equipment to access, analyze and/or present the information learned about the Dewey Decimal System. Therefore, "A Video and Mr. Dewey" meets the Acceptable level for the Information Literacy Curriculum objective.
