Standard #2:  Teaching & Learning

Objective:  Effective & Knowledgeable Teacher

The concept of Media Specialist as teacher has been emphasized by the McDaniel SLM program and it is part of my philosophy as a professional educator. Therefore, one of my goals as a Media Specialist is to be recognized by my school colleagues as a teacher. Co-planning a lesson is an essential first step toward this goal. While I have written the lesson, “A Video and Mr. Dewey,” and designed it with an ESOL class in mind, I will not present it to the ESOL teacher as a finished product. She and I will adapt it for her particular class and incorporate her ideas. When the planning is finalized, the instruction will be shared by the Media Specialist and teacher. Assessing the students’ work will also be shared. Therefore, the student learning experiences will be created, implemented and evaluated by the Media Specialist and teacher. Additionally, the TV Technician and Media Assistants will assist in the creation, implementation and evaluation of sections of the lesson. I have also written a second lesson, “The Mean Old Man of Fishing Creek,” for co-instruction. After listening to a storytelling of “The Mean Old Man of Fishing Creek,” students practice the use of the card catalog and of atlases. While I have written the lesson, I will ask the social studies teacher for ideas to incorporate. We will share the instruction in the media center and the assessing of the students’ work. Since both lessons are designed for co-planning, co-teaching and co-assessing information skills, the two artifacts meet the Acceptable level for this objective.
