Access to Information

Every SLM course I have taken at McDaniel has taught a philosophy of “put the students first.” This will be reflected in every aspect of my media center. Two artifacts, "Media Center User Policy" and "Media Center Sign-Up," were designed with this philosophy in mind. In order for students to have access beyond the school day, the media center will be open for 45 minutes before and 90 minutes after school. Students can visit with a pass from a teacher most any time during class. This will be one of the only media centers in our county which allows three classes to use our facilities simultaneously if the need arises. That's 90 or more students accessing information in the library during one class period. In addition to having easy access to information at school, students must be able to retrieve information at home. This home access will be provided by the books students check out and the Internet. Most students in Montgomery County Public Schools have Internet access at home and we are fortunate that our public libraries offer this service after schools are closed. Two artifacts provide access to information for students working on the Internet from home. "Access to Information Sources" provides links to the MCPS web site. Remote access to online encyclopedia, dictionary, newspaper and magazine databases paid for by MCPS is available. With passwords that can be obtained through the students' media specialist, these databases are available for student use at home. "Copyright Information" contains several user-friendly sites which explain these rules in plain English. Therefore, these artifacts meet the Target level objectives of providing flexible and open access to the media center services through varied scheduling and by providing remote access to information use at home.
