The Food Pyramid

Introduction:

By keeping our body healthy and strong we are able to do many of the things we like to do.  One of the ways to keep our body strong is to eat healthy foods.  But how do we know what foods are healthy for us?

Information:

The government has designed a triangle which shows how to eat a healthy diet.  The foods at the bottom of the triangle are foods that a person should eat frequently (6-11 servings a day).  The foods at the top of the triangle are foods that should be eaten sparingly.  The web site www.nal.usda.gov:8001/py/pmap.htm has a food triangle on display.  Study this triangle.  Click on all the portions of the triangle to discover information about those particular food groups.

Activity:

Using the food triangle as a guide look at the two menus plans.  Let’s pretend the cafeteria has given the class the decision as to which menu will be served.  Decide which menu is the most nutritious based on the food triangle.

Menu #1                                          Menu #2

Tuna fish sandwich on                    cheeseburger on a bun

whole wheat bread

carrot sticks                                     potato chips

apple                                               brownie

skim milk                                         soda

Which menu is the most nutritious and has a variety of foods from the food pyramid?

Menu #______

Write a note to the cafeteria workers explaining the menu choice.  Make sure you include in your note why one menu is better than the other.
