Instructional Activities Elective
At the present I am teaching 8th grade math at e. Russell Hicks Middle School in Washington County, Maryland. The following sites deal with middle school math. Algebra and pre algebra in particular. Some of my students have not passed the Maryland Functional Math Test so some functional sites will be included. Enjoy!
- www.ed.edhelper.com – This site can help you create lesson plans, has 5000 free worksheets, 1600 critical thinking generators, puzzles and more. There is however a yearly membership of $19.99. The worksheets are based on NCTM standards which is a big plus. There are some sample worksheets but you had to subscribe to get easy access to the answers. They were emailed to me but it wasn’t immediate access.
- www.teach-nology.com/teachers/lesson_plans/math/algebra/ A super site with plenty of pre algebra and algebra activities. Many involve logic and problem solving. I particularly liked the traffic jam activity.
- www.math.rice.edu/~lanius/Lessons/calentry.html A great free sight with activities for all levels of math. This is a calendar puzzle.
- http://school.discovery.com/teachingtools/teachingtools.html This site had tools for teachers, worksheet generators, puzzles and quizzes. The brain boosters helped in the area of logic figuring. A handy tool!
- www.superkids.com/aweb/tools/math A free worksheet creator but this would apply to functional math primarily.
- http://www.hwforkids.com An ideal extra site to tell kids to practice skills in all levels from addition to algebra. It also could give teachers extra sheets for practice.
- http://www.kidzone.ws/math/index.htm This is an excellent site for functional math and special classes. It has brain teasers. It also has math related to other subject areas and themes. Elementary math teachers would definitely find this site useful.
