The Civil War was one of the bloodiest wars fought on American soil.  Brother turned against brother, family against family, and nation against nation.  Naive young soldiers’ heads were filled with images of proud generals, fearless soldiers, and everyday heroes.  Those who fought in the war, however, were faced with horrible images of death, amputation, unsanitary conditions, harsh cold, and murder.

Your assignment is to search the internet and find two photographs taken during the time of the Civil War.  One photograph must capture the beauty, honor, and glory of riding into battle.  The other must capture the horrible experiences of the Civil War.  You must print both images out and be sure to record

1.      where you found your images  (the website, owner, book, archives, etc.)

2.      who (if available) took the picture

3.      who/what is in the photograph

4.      where (if available) the picture was taken

You will print up a small caption to mount under your images.  With your photographs, we will create two bulletin boards, one showing the glory of war and the other showing the brutality of war.  To help you get started and to ensure that we don’t have any “repeats” of photographs, here are some web addresses to help you get started:

Of course, you can always conduct your own search!  I would suggest using Lycos, Netscape, or Google!  Your search words should probably be “Civil War Photographs.”
