Introduction:
It is no secret that the University of Maryland men’s basketball team struggled with their free throw (foul) shooting this season. This fact can be seen by looking at the team’s statistics. Percentages, which we have just finished studying, are the basis of computing statistics.
Information:
To calculate a free throw percentage (FTP) for a player, divide free throws made (FTM) by free throw attempts (FTA).
FTP = FTM / FTA
This equation can be altered to estimate the number of free throws a certain player might make, given the number attempted and his past free throw percentage.
Activity:
Go to CNN’s statistics page for the 2003-04 Terps
basketball team. Assume that in one
game, each player had the chance to shoot the number of foul shots listed
below. According to the free throw
percentage (FTP) given on the web page, calculate the number of free throws
each player could be expected to make in this game. Round your answers to the nearest whole number. You may print this page and use the chart
below for your answers.
