Required Activities:
q Search Engine This is a list that I created of what I feel are the best general, meta, news, children, and science search engines. http://www2.mcdaniel.edu/slm/student/sheehyr/searchengine.htm
q Link Bibliography Here is a page that I made which contains websites dealing with Taxonomy, including sites for notes, activities, definitions, origin, and examples. http://www2.mcdaniel.edu/slm/student/sheehyr/linkbib.htm
q Copyright This page consists of two incidents involving the use of copyrighted material and my responses, based on information I found when researching copyright infringement, to whether these incidents were in violation to their copyrights. http://www2.mcdaniel.edu/slm/student/sheehyr/copyright.htm
q Course Module My course module is designed to inform students how to use the Internet to search a specific topic, in this case Biology activities, while informing teachers of student interests in such activities and allowing students to participate in the development of the class syllabus by picking several activities and then choosing which to use during the semester. http://www2.mcdaniel.edu/slm/student/sheehyr/coursemodule.htm
q Web Quest This is a webquest that I developed for an Anatomy and Physiology class to both teach them about the skeletal system and to reinforce what they learned by creating a childrens book to be taught at a local elementary school. This activity can work well with Biology 1 and 2 students as well as elementary grades other than fourth grade. After the completion of the task, I asked the students to write a 2-page reaction paper about what they thought of the activity and if I should use it again. http://www2.mcdaniel.edu/slm/student/sheehyr/webquest.htm
Web Dropins:
q
Dropin #1 This activity on
the Skeletal System is to be used as an introduction to the unit. A more
detailed reading or learning on the skeletal system should follow this
activity, especially when used with high school students. It may be sufficient
enough without supplemental materials for middle school, but your own judgment
should be used when deciding. The activity is planned to teach students the
functions and composition of the skeletal system without the use of real
technical words. http://www2.mcdaniel.edu/slm/student/sheehyr/dropin1.htm
q Dropin #2 After reading about Photosynthesis, students
will be able to describe the two reactions in Photosynthesis and apply their
knowledge of the topic to create a poster of the overall process, including
sources of needed chemicals and destinations of products.
http://www2.mcdaniel.edu/slm/student/sheehyr/dropin2.htm
q Dropin #3 In this activity, students will read about Gregor Mendel and his experiments with pea plants and use his discoveries to understand the concepts of Mendelian Genetics and complete a Punnett Square given minimal assistance. http://www2.mcdaniel.edu/slm/student/sheehyr/dropin3.htm
q Dropin #4 This activity is useful for an introductory unit to general Biology. It takes students through collecting information on the two main views of human origin, Creationism and Evolutionism. They are then asked to provide evidence on which view they hold and whether Creationism should be taught in school. http://www2.mcdaniel.edu/slm/student/sheehyr/dropin4.htm
q Dropin #5 During this activity, students will become familiar with the six major biomes and creating appropriate charts to display learned information. http://www2.mcdaniel.edu/slm/student/sheehyr/dropin5.htm
Electives:
q Instructional Worksheets I have created a list of web links for worksheets geared towards secondary teachers. It includes mainly sites on Anatomy, but does contain a few dealing with general Biology. http://www2.mcdaniel.edu/slm/student/sheehyr/worksheet.htm
q Virtual Field Trip This brochure contains four engaging sites on the different aspects of the solar system. The sites teach students about galaxies, the sun, the nine planets, space phenomena, and space equipment through the use of pictures, video clips, and 360-degree panoramic views that can be manipulated by the student. http://www2.mcdaniel.edu/slm/student/sheehyr/fieldtrip.htm
q Online Gaming Here is a synopsis of my online gaming experience at Yahoo games. I suggest trying it if you have enough time and do not get addicted too easily. http://www2.mcdaniel.edu/slm/student/sheehyr/games.htm
q Teacher Websites I have found two websites that were created by Biology teachers for their students to use. In this activity I have provided the links to these sites along with a short introduction and some comments on each. http://www2.mcdaniel.edu/slm/student/sheehyr/teachersites.htm
q Instructional Modifications I have made a list of ten instructional modifications teachers can make in their classrooms for students with visual disabilities and students with lower reading levels when using computers and the Internet. This list was made so that the use of such technology in classrooms would become more prevalent because teachers would be provided with helpful information. http://www2.mcdaniel.edu/slm/student/sheehyr/modifications.htm
q Viruses This is a tip sheet on viruses, worms, Trojan horse, virus hoaxes, and how to prevent the spreading of viruses. At the bottom of the tip sheet is a link to my letter in response to receiving a hoax email. http://www2.mcdaniel.edu/slm/student/sheehyr/viruses.htm and http://www2.mcdaniel.edu/slm/student/sheehyr/viruses2.htm, respectively.
q Clipart Finding free clipart on the Internet can be somewhat time consuming. If you have ever searched the internet and got infuriated because many web sites appeared claiming to have free clipart, but were not truly free, you should look at my list of five free and plentiful clipart web sites. http://www2.mcdaniel.edu/slm/student/sheehyr/clipart.htm
q Translation With the increasing diversity in the United States school system several problems are arising, such as the inability to communicate between teacher and student, student and student, and teacher and parent. This activity looks at the use of translation services on the Internet and how they can be of use in instructional settings. http://www2.mcdaniel.edu/slm/student/sheehyr/translation.htm
q Safety One of the growing fears today for many parents is their childs use of the Internet because of the ambiguity of other users and websites. Due to the hidden identity of other Internet users and website addresses, your child could be viewing pages he/she should not have access to or talking to potentially dangerous individuals. We should not, however, ban children from using such educational tools, but should instead limit the amount of resources on the Internet they have access to. I have created an Internet Safety Checklist for my students when using the computer center and a letter to their parents about how the school and myself are working together to provide them with safe access to the Internet. http://www2.mcdaniel.edu/slm/student/sheehyr/safety.htm and http://www2.mcdaniel.edu/slm/student/sheehyr/safety2.htm
q Spam If you have ever received those mass emails, you might want to read this handout I created about Spam. It describes what spam is, what are some problems caused by spam, and what you and the government can do about spam. http://www2.mcdaniel.edu/slm/student/sheehyr/spam.htm
