Silicon Snake Oil Elective Activity
1. The use of the internet serves to isolate ourselves from others.
* Face to face meetings are
more valuable than communicating through cyberspace. Non verbal communication
is very important but can not be
conveyed effectively over the internet.
* People communicating over
the internet can pretend to be someone they are not.
* Use of the internet is
only one means of communication. It should not be the only method used,
some situations require face to face contact.
2. Information over the internet is often incorrect, misleading, or incomplete.
* I agree with this statement.
Many sites do contain incorrect or misleading information. Let's face it,
anyone can put something on the web.
* A large amount of high
quality information can be accessed on the internet.
* Students need to be taught
how to evaluate the information on a web site. Students need to know how
to locate the author of a web page and
determine the author's purpose for the web page.
3. Computers in education take away from real life, personal, experiences used for learning.
* Learning by experience
is a powerful educational strategy that helps students remember information
and concepts better than other methods.
* Computers allow students
and teachers to access multimedia sources that can not be accessed in real
life. For example, how many classes are able to take a
field trip to a rain forest?
* A real life field trip
must be taken when possible instead of a virtual trip. Real life field
trips allow students to use all of their senses and allow kinesthetic
learners to make memory connections.
4. The increased use of computers limits and stunts the problem solving ability of students.
* Computers can be used to
solve many mathematical problems.
* Computers can be a tool
that allow us to perform even more complex problem solving.
* Students need to be taught
how to use the computer in problem solving. Students need to know what
types of programs to use, how to input information, and
how to interpret what the answer means.
5. The Internet will be the demise of books, newspapers, and libraries.
* The internet does make
many sources (especially periodicals) available quickly and easily.
* Libraries will not be
demolished because of the internet, rather they will be supplemented by
the internet. Gone will be the days of using those hard to read
microfilm viewers.
* Students should still
use some print sources with reports and presentations. This is a way to
check the accuracy of any information obtained on the internet.
