History of the Orchestra

Objectives

Using the internet as a resource; students will obtain a better understanding of the origin, uses and history of the orchestra.

Introduction

In a prior activity, you learned that an orchestra is a group of instruments playing together.  Have you ever heard music played by an orchestra?  Did you ever wonder how all of those musicians and all of those instruments came together to make such marvelous music?  Orchestral music was played over four hundred years ago and is still enjoyed to this day.  

During this activity, you will find information pertaining to the orchestra and complete a list of questions that compares the orchestra of the 18th and 19th centuries to that of today.

Once your research has been completed, write down your answers to the following questions and bring them to me before the end of the week.  Remember to include your name and the title of this activity on your papers.

(3) During what century did they first appear?

(4) What were the uses of the orchestra during the 17th & 18th centuries?

(5)  What are the uses of the orchestra today?
