My thoughts on what
a School Library Media Site Should Contain and What I Would Include Were
I to Build One.
I. COMPONENTS
1. A warm and fuzzy welcome to the site.
I think it is important to make visitors,
especially children, feel welcome as soon as they
land on the site. The chance of them turning
their browsers off and staying awhile is much
greater this way!
2. Pictures of the library that are of good
quality.
I would want pictures of the most
important features of the library: Circulation Desk,
Catalog Computers, as well
as any special features such as a Reading Nook, Study Area,
etc.. My reason for this would be that
children would be encouraged to visit the library.
3. Names, pictures and email addresses of
the employees of the library.
I can't think of a better way to
encourage students to speak to and/or correspond with
library personelle than to have
them appear both approachable and familiar.
4. Study tips, tips for making presentations,
test taking tips, etc.
This feature would increase the
value of the site to students which would increase the
liklihood of them
revisiting.
5. Calender of School Events.
What better way to keep students
informed than by offering them a place where they can
view upcoming and current events.
6. Links to other sites for the school,
links to the county's Board of Ed.
Student's would find the links
to the school's other sites and parents may find the Board
of Ed. link helpful.
7. List of new or featured items added
or belonging to the library
collection.
A nice way to showcase
items in the library's collection and point out their usefulness.
8. List of subject headings
along with links to resources that students
would find helpful.
The
list would be a convenient way for students to find online resources for
subjects of study.
Some suggested links are:
a. University of Deleware Library - http://www.2.lib.udel.edu/subj/
b. Smithsonian Education - http://smithsonianeducation.org/students/index.html
c. Internation Children's
Digital Library - http://www.icdlbooks.org/
d. Theme
Pages for Elementary Students and Teachers -
http://stemnet.nf.ca/CITE/themes.html
e.
Homework Spot - http://www.homeworkspot.com
The aforementioned
links are useful for all areas of study.
9. List of child
safe search engines.
It would be helpful
to students if a list of search engines, that filter inappropriate
material, were available for them to conduct further research. Suggested
links are:
a.

b.
