Search Engines – Best in Category!

This site provides a general evaluation of search engines in the following categories:  General Search Engines, Just For Kids, Images and Sounds, Full Coverage News and Maps.  I have selected what I feel are the best two in each category and have explained my reasoning for these choices.  The search engines have been evaluated in terms of their speed, ease of use and comprehensiveness in terms of relevant search results.

General Search Engines:

All The Web – This is a general search engine providing excellent resources ranging from a search of the web, to images, sounds and videos.  The site is very quick and easy-to-use, and allows the user to conduct a very limited search.

Full Coverage News:

Yahoo Full Coverage – This search engine includes a complete compilation of background coverage organized by editors.  Not only does the site highlight the top stories in such categories as “Business,” “World,” “Entertainment,” and others, but the search engine includes abstracts of the news articles, along with a very comprehensive list of other links on which the user may click.  Links to specific newspapers are included, and Yahoo Full Coverage provides complete articles, with current and breaking news stories.  An excellent site!

US News Briefings – The search engine is an excellent source for those seeking more than simply basic news stories.  The staff at US News has compiled background information, basic facts, biographies of key players, and links to relevant documents and Web sites, in order to help readers better understand the facts behind the printed articles.  A complete list of links to various news categories, as well as to specific news sources is available.  The website also highlights both breaking and ongoing stories.

Maps:

TIGER Maps – This search engine is an excellent source for obtaining maps to most cities and towns in the United States.  Quick loading and with clear and easy-to-read maps, the website allows for the user to incorporate such details as street names, parks, grid lines and counties.  Users may have maps redrawn according to their specification, and may zoom in to find smaller details.  The only complaint regarding TIGER maps is that it uses information from the 1998 census, and could be a bit more current.
