Fractions

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS GEARED TOWARDS 3TH GRADE, BUT MAY BE MODIFIED FOR OTHER STUDENTS

Introduction:

Fractions are a difficult idea for teachers to describe and especially difficult for students to understand.  However, in terms of “real life” uses, fractions are extremely important for everyone to use.  How would you split a muffin between two people?  How about between three?  What about splitting three pizzas between seven people?  Now it gets a little more difficult.  This is why fractions are important.

Information:

Fractions represent parts of a whole.  One half is one part out of two.  One fourth of a pizza with eight slices is two slices.  You will see these concepts in more detail in the following lesson.  We have already talked about fractions and how they work, so some of this will be review and some will be new.

Activity:

You will be using  the Cool Math 4 Kids website (http://www.coolmath4kids.com/index.html).  Do each of the fractions lessons provided below.  After you have read over the mini-lesson, choose the green triangle labeled “Try It” in the left hand column.  Be sure to concentrate and ask for help if you need it, because you will be completing a small assessment on these skills!
