LS 521- Spring ‘02
2/28/02
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS GEARED TOWARDS 7TH or 8th
GRADE, BUT MAY BE MODIFIED FOR OTHER STUDENTS
Introduction:
Every student here has been to at
least one school in the United States (because you are in one right now!), and
many of you may have been to several.
Some of you have come from other countries and may have gone to school
there as well. It does not matter how
many schools you have been to, but it does matter what your experiences
were. How many students were in each
classroom? Did you like your
teachers? What type (public or
private) of school was it? All of these
factors had an influence on your time there.
Information:
Schools around the world can be
very different from ours. These
differences may be caused by various things, including culture, monetary
support (money for schools), and the economy of the country. Some countries do not have the money to even
feed its people, let alone build and adequately maintain schools. Other countries have to make it with little
funds and support from the government.
Think about what support we get from the government. How does living in the United States affect
our school?
Activity:
Go to the Spotlight on Chile site
(http://www.localaccess.com/chappell/chile/schools.htm) and read the article by
David Chappell, a Spanish teacher from Washington (state). While reading it, be sure to think about
what similarities and differences there are between those schools and yours.

After you have finished reading,
