Timothy Ratliff’s Web Index for SLM 521

Search Engines – A list containing what I consider to be the best search engines out there.  They are separated into five categories with each category containing my top two picks.

Web Bibliography – A list containing links to websites I felt were useful for students and teachers of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union.  There are 20 links under various categories.

Web Dropin 1 – This first dropin is a basic exercise to get students acquainted with the people, places, events, and dates of the Cold War.

Web Dropin 2 – This second dropin works off of the first one and includes graphics and a trivia game.

Web Dropin 3 – This third dropin includes elements of all three dropins so far.  Students will explore interactive maps to answer questions.

Web Dropin 4 – This fourth dropin includes elements from the first two dropins.  The dropin examines the different opinions and attitudes about the Vietnam War.

Web Dropin 5 – This fourth dropin includes elements from the first two dropins and a graphic representation.  The focus topic for this dropin was the Cuban Missile Crisis of the Cold War.

Elective # 3: Collaborative – A list of five collaborative projects that can be useful for social studies teachers.  The projects focus on Secondary Education, although some of the projects can be appropriate for younger classrooms.

Elective # 6:  Virtual Field Trip – A virtual field trip travel brochure that provides everything you need for an Ancient Roman adventure!  Choose from a handful of virtual field trips that take you from Pompeii to a day in the life of a wealthy Roman.

Elective # 8:  Online Shopping – A list in table format that includes helpful shopping sites for a variety of different shopping experiences.  Looking for auction, discount, or comparisons, this list has it along with two links for each category.

Elective # 10: Lesson Plans – A list of five sites that have valuable lesson plans.  A few of the sites are actually lesson plan search engines that provide lesson plans on a many subjects.  The remaining sites focus on Secondary Ed history and social studies.

Elective # 11: Sounds – This elective takes advantage of using sounds in an educational activity.  I decided to make the activity fit the mold of a Web Dropin but with sound clips attached.  The focus is on McCarthyism and the activity includes two sound clips from Senator McCarthy’s speeches.

Elective # 12: Email – This is a list of what I consider the top ten suggestions in regards to using email.  I have included tips and some problems that could arise if these tips are not used when sending emails.  The target audience is high school students or adults.

Course Module – This is the culminating project from the course.  It adds onto the course module to virtual field trips by asking the student to compare field trips rather than create a travel brochure.
