Early Childhood Levels

 

Starfall-Learn to Read

This site contains activities for students in Grades K-1. It’s an excellent resource to use for ESL students because it reads the words for them to hear the pronunciation. The lessons on this site also cover phonemic awareness skills and letter recognition skills. . It has activities and games for the students to use that are linked to the books they read on the site. Yu can print out the booklets and activities for use in the class and at home.

This site offers good educational games for kids, such as math Tic Tac Toe, The Grammar Gorillas, What’s the Word etc, from easy to hard levels. There are more math and language arts activities on this site. One of the links is an activity that involves translating words into another language. Students in the upper elementary level would enjoy this site

Here is another excellent website for students in grades K-2 who are learning another language. This site offers pre-reading skills in English and 3 other languages. This is a great website to use as a class center activity to reinforce and practice letter pronunciation, phonemic awareness skills and letter recognition. These lessons/activities are free but do not have printable worksheets.

This site has wonderful resources like maps, crafts and picture dictionary. You can print up booklets related to many topics for early to fluent readers. You can Surf the Web with “Little Explorers” which is a picture dictionary with links to over 1000 educational activities.

This site contains many different resources, handouts and exercises for ESL Teachers and students. Along with handouts and lesson plans the links with to resources for ESL students that assist them by answering general questions about the English language and helping with grammar problems, idioms, and academic conventions. For teachers, there are links to resources including online journals and an annotated bibliography for ESL instructors. These can be very helpful for new ESL educators.

This is another resource site for ESL students and teachers that contain activities and links for them. It’s categorized by  Stuff for Teachers”, “Stuff for Students” and “Stuff for Everyone”. Under “Stuff for Teachers”, there are links to activities/lessons (if you click onto Idea Cookbook) and links to some job opportunities in this field. Under “Stuff for Students”, there are links to activities that include student forums for students to chat with other ELLs along with activities for learning English.  This is a well known website for ESOL teachers and comes well recommended for ESL students and teachers.

They are high interest level materials, which make students enthusiastic about working with these programs. There are many combinations of activities, which will also help students to focus on the skills they need to improve.

This site contains was designed to lead, design, and implement professional development institutes for teachers of English language learners. These institutes improve teachers’ knowledge of English language and academic content. Under resources, there is a link to an annotated bibliography of publications that are of particular interest to teachers of English language learners. Also there is another link to help you learn how to write activities for the web and see examples to give you ideas for your own activities.

This site contains all kinds of resources for teaching ELLs. It has guidelines to follow for Reading Tutoring Sessions: English Language Learners. It lists tips for Working with English Language Learners such as “watch your language, model correct usage, value the culture of the learner” and “encourage conversation” along with more details/suggestions on how to do this with your 2nd language learners. This is a great resource for regular education teachers and for teachers of ELLs.
