Search Engines: I have chosen some choice search engines for research in the areas of: general, shopping, kid safe, travel, and medical topics. Caution: I have only provided one Kid Safe search engine as I feel parents should help their children navigate the Internet and find sites of interest to the child and then save those specific sites to the childs favorites.

Web Drop-In #1: La tuna is a unique student group in Spain and some other countries, not fish to eat. Use this web site to learn more about this tradition and then complete the worksheet.

Web Drop-In #3: People often think that the Spanish-speaking countries are very similar. For example, they look for tacos and burritos in every restaurant in Spain. However, with 21 countries/regions that speak Spanish, each has its own unique characteristics. Investigate five Spanish-speaking countries through the CIA Factbook site to learn more about their unique features.

Web Drop-In #4: Puerto Rico is commonly talked about as a Spanish-speaking country; however, it is actually a part of the United States. To find out more about this Caribbean island and its ties to the United States, check out the CIA Factbook. Then investigate the different political possibilities for this island. http://www2.mcdaniel.edu/slm/student/radakerd/webdrop4.htm

Web Drop-In #5: Shakira is perhaps the hottest Latina musician at the moment. However, she has been in the music industry for many years. To learn more about her and her career, check out my activity and links.

Internet Online Course Module: Blackboard is a very valuable program for teachers and professors.  Most graduate students (teachers) have only used this when taking a course. I provide an opportunity to think about how to use the program as an instructor.

Electives:

Translation (Utilities Elective): As a Spanish teacher, I tested the ability of the translation sites provided by the instructors. Read my translation and my views.

Games Online: I have presented my experience and views on online gaming, not gambling. I tried the Yahoo games site and the Comcast games site.

Citing Internet Sources: The APA style of citation is presented briefly with an explanation why I used this style. My students tend to be majors in other fields with a concentration or minor in Spanish. Therefore, I do present both styles to my students, but most benefit from learning the APA style of citation. I require them to use either APA or MLA style for their famous Hispanic project to cite their resources.

Hoaxes: Using the CDC site, I investigated rumors of hantavirus, a deadly virus caused by mice in humans that is an air-borne virus. Read my findings and thoughts on this scare that chain e-mails caused.

E-Mail Protocol: At the university level it is important for the student to learn proper protocol in e-mails that need to be professional and proper. I have provided my TOP TEN LIST for e-mailing for my students to follow.

Virtual Fieldtrips: Cancun, Mexico, one of the favorite places for college students on Spring break. I wanted to take my students on Spring Break to Cancun and show them some of the cultural places so they know that there is more to Cancun, besides beaches, margaritas, and partying. Check out the sites of Cancun and the Yucatan Peninsula.

Blogging: As an educator, you may want to check out edublogs since it is intended to be a site for teachers to post blogs for students or simply comments on educational topics. I chose to create 3 blogs: one for those students entering Spanish 102 this semester, one for those entering Spanish 103 this semester, and one to help the students get to know me in a ‘professor’ capacity yet personally. Check out my entries at:

Plagiarism:  Check out my handout for the fellow professors about plagiarism.  I provide pointers to help deter such practice by college students as well as provide a list of sites that can be used to search for questionable passages.

Safety: In the language laboratory at the university, it is essential to provide the students with some guidelines and a student/instructor agreement to deter or eliminate problems.  Students have other access opportunities to use the Internet.  Therefore, the instructor needs to be clear able the expected behavior when utilizing the laboratory facilities for class.
