Immigration Entrance: Ellis Island |

Introduction: We have discussed immigration to the United States during the period of the “old” immigrants and the “new” immigrants – from the English to Eastern Europeans, of all religions and ethnic groups. But how did those immigrants – especially the “new” immigrants – enter the United States ? How did the United States keep track of the multitudes of people entering her shores? What did those people do, once they entered “ America the Great?”
Activity I: Using the outline you received in class complete the following activities.
- Go to the following Ellis Island link.
- Read the primary source excerpts to familiarize yourself with the types of individuals who immigrated to the “ New World .”
- Go to the link – Introduction. Fill in your outline’s missing information.
- Go to the link – Regulations. Fill in your outline’s missing information.
- Hand the outline to me at the end of class.
Activity II: Using the chart you print from the web site complete the following activities.
- In class, you were assigned a specific country to investigate and explore.
- Print off a copy of the immigration chart.
- Go to your assigned country’s link at Ellis Island. Click on your link. Read the information. Fill in your chart.
- We will discuss this information further in class – keep your charts!
Activity III: Using the question sheet you received in class complete the following activities.
- Go to the Statue of Liberty link at the Ellis Island web site.
- Fill in the missing information on your question sheet.
- Hand the question sheet to me at the end of class.
