Secession
and the
State of the Union

 

Directions: In this study, you will be analyzing maps and assessing their value to the historian. Please follow these instructions carefully.

  1. Answer the following questions/activities, using the pictured maps.
  2. Put the answers in your Civil War Journal.
  3. You need only write the answer in your journal – but make sure you date the journal and title the page “Secession and the State of the Union .”

Question/Activity #1:

  1. Make a table in your journal – you must decide the needed amount of columns and rows!
  2. Create a tabled list of each category of the states of the union, at the time after secession.
  3. Include in your table the number of each category.

Question/Activity #2:

  1. Using the chart you just created and the map above – recheck your data, making sure that both maps “jibe.”
  2. What state is missing and what is its status?
  3. On your chart, not which states seceded first and which states seceded second.
