Podcasts

Goals:

Students will become familiar with Podcasts and will learn what they are, how to find them, and how to use them for teaching lessons and for pleasure.  This relates to the ISTE standard that states “Teachers demonstrate a sound understanding of technology operations and concepts.”

Content Overview:

Podcasts are a very new phenomenon to hit the Internet.  Essentially, they are radio programs and other types of programs on the Internet that you can listen to by “episode.”  Everyone from celebrities to scientists to people teaching you to speak different languages have Podcasts!  To make things even better, you get to decide what you want to listen to them say by choosing an episode that appeals to you.

Reading and Discussion:

Read this article from Yahoo! http://podcasts.yahoo.com/start/1 that explains what a podcast is.  Think of this reading as a crash course in everything dealing with podcasts.  Make sure you read all three “pages” of the site.

Activities:

Next, look at the various podcasts that are offered just through Yahoo! by visiting this site: http://podcasts.yahoo.com/.  Make sure you check out the “Most Popular” and “Highly Rated” section in the middle of the page.  Listen to a few that interests you.  You may have to subscribe to some, but don’t worry, everything found on this site is free!

Assessments/Assignments:

Using the sites given or other sites you find, make an annotated list of at least 5 podcasts that interest you.  Then try to find at least 3 podcasts that would interest your students or that you could use in your class.  You do not have to listen to all of these podcasts, but you do need to read the information about it to ensure that it is about what you think it is. For each entry, you include:

-website the podcast originally was found on

            -name of the podcast

-if you have to subscribe to it or download to your computer

-any episodes that stand out for some reason to you.

Submission:

Post your assignment as an html file to the McDaniel Web Server and make a link of your index page.  Also please send your instructor an email with the file’s URL.
