Worksheets for Middle School Reading and English Instruction

After hours of searching, the following are the sites I found that contain useful, printable worksheets for Language Arts.

1.  RHL School

Reading Comprehension worksheets are available at this site.  Printable worksheets include: vocabulary using context clues, cloze activities, stories with comprehension questions, poems, essays, and articles.  This site is geared to upper elementary and middle school.

2. Gigglepotz

Gigglepotz contains forms for teachers.  The printable sheets are helpful for general classroom management as well as Language Arts.  I like the reading logs, book reports, project planning guides, and behavior forms.

3.  Clearvue Educator Resources

Five English and reading worksheets are available on this website. They are free to download using Adobe Acrobat Reader.   The topics include biography, fact and opinion, grammar, reading skills, and quotes.  A work sheet and answer sheet are included in each document.

4.  Houghton Mifflin Graphic Organizers

A variety of graphic organizers are available for teachers to print from this website.     The organizers are also available in Spanish!  They can be printed in PDF format using Adobe Acrobat Reader.  My favorites are Describing Wheel, Planning Chart, ISP, and Story Maps 1-3.

5.  Teacher Time Saver Worksheets Page

The Language Arts section of this website is fantastic!  There are practice sheets for grammar, vocabulary, dictionary skills, book reports, as well as word searches.  Also included are activity cards for basic skill practice.

6.  Time 4 Teachers

Sample Language Arts activities can be opened and printed for free using either Word or Adobe Acrobat Reader.  There is also a CD Rom available for purchase.  Most of the activities are geared toward upper elementary and middle school students. Other sections of Time 4 Teachers include, printable teacher sources, and black line masters through teacher-to-teacher exchange.

7.  Teaching Resources – Language Arts Ideas

Laura Candler has opened her file cabinet for all teachers to browse through.  Many of her language Arts activities are appropriate for 6th and 7th grade English.  I plan to use some of her poetry, grammar, and writing activities.

8.  Vocabulary University

Word puzzles and activities are available to help students prepare for SATs and other standardized tests.  Some activities are interactive and some are available for printing. Level 2 is designed for middle school students.  The activities help to increase vocabulary and verbal test-taking skills.

9.  Spell it Right

Middle School students need help with spelling!  This site has great advice for teachers and parents, worksheets, puzzles, and exercises that will help to improve spelling.  There are even spelling activities for content words in math and science.  The site was created in the UK.  I found that some of the words on the site are spelled differently than in the US.  However, Spell it Right is too helpful to leave off this list!
