Citing Internet Resources

PART I

Of the four MLA sources for citing Internet resources, I would send students doing research papers to Skillman & Kirby Libraries from Lafayette College.  This source does not demonstrate how to cite a wide variety of resources.  However, I have learned from experience how much difficulty students have locating the necessary information to include in citations.  If the information is not found directly on the page, many students will give up.  On the Lafayette page, components that should be included are identified, described, followed by hints on where to find the information, and what to do if the information cannot be located.  This section of the page is useful for students who are not sure where to look for the proper citation information.

In addition, this site includes both APA and MLA styles of documenting sources. The teacher must be very clear about which format the students should use.  Examples are included for web sites and online articles from databases. Students, who use other sources for a research project such as images or e-mail, could find how to cite the sources using the “For More Information” section of the page.  Included are links to several online style guides as well as a MLA style page and an APA style page.  Many student researchers need explicit directions to properly cite resources.  I think Skillman & Kirby Libraries from Lafayette College provide the best resources for properly citing Internet sources.
