Studying New Zealand on the Web

 

Social Studies Activity for Grade 3

 

To begin our unit on New Zealand, we will visit the continent of Oceania on the CultureGrams website.  The URL for this website page is http://online.culturegrams.com/kids/kids_region.php?contid=8&wmn=Oceania.  Once you have arrived on the Oceana page, select New Zealand and you will see many types of information about this country. 

 

Complete the following activities for today’s assignment:

 

1.  Listen to the name of the country and its national anthem by selecting the buttons in the Listening Station.

 

2.  Write 5 facts about New Zealand on your worksheet by writing one fact from each of the following categories:  people and places, history, lifestyle, society and culture.

 

3.  Choose the link for the photo gallery and scroll through the pictures you see.  Are the images you see similar to the things you enjoy doing here in the United States?  What pictures would you include if you had to prepare a photo gallery of your life in the United States.  Record your answers in the space provided on the worksheet.

 

4.  Create a replica of New Zealand’s flag at the bottom of your worksheet in the box provided.

 

When you are finished, we will discuss our facts in small groups.  If someone has written facts that are different than the ones you have chosen, write these additional facts on your worksheet on the lines provided.  As you discuss your facts, think about whether you would like to live in New Zealand and why or why not.  You will be given additional time to share your opinions.
