Upon Completion of the Course Module, the student will be able to:

Objective

Explore various websites dedicated to children and young adult authors and literature.

Objective

Locate grade level appropriate material on an author, his/her biography, books, interviews and other media to develop an effective power point presentation to utilize as part of an author’s showcase unit within the language arts curriculum.

Objective

Create an entire lesson on a children’s’ or young adult author as an engaging power point presentation.

Introduction

Children’s’ literature is a focal point in the K-12 language arts curriculum.  It is important for teachers and students to be familiar not only with the work of various authors, but to discover the person behind the story, become familiar with their lifestyle and mission for writing great children’s literature.  For many students, reading literature for assignments becomes just that – work that needs to be completed for a grade.  Providing students with the opportunity to get to know several authors adds a personal dimension to reading and understanding.  Students meet an author through video interviews, learn why the author writes, how the author writes, and the purpose behind their writing.   All four of these aspects combined with the literary work itself help students to internalize and retain in deeper depth the scope and breadth of an author’s literature.

In this activity, students will explore various author websites.  They will learn (1) the awards the American Library Association (ALA) bestows on accomplished authors, (2) how an author earns a distinguished award from the American Library Association, (3) which authors have won awards from the ALA and (4) when these authors won their awards from the ALA.  Then, they will create a body of information which will serve as the basis for an instructional power point presentation, complete with pictures, graphics and an interview session to utilize as part of an instructional unit on children’s’ or young adult authors.

Activities:

Step 1:  What types of sites dedicated to children’s’ and young adult literature are available?

2.       Brief annotation including sites useful features, user friendliness, and examples of how you could use this site’s features in a learning activity, etc.)

3.       Date site visited.

4.       URL Address (do not make this the link to the site).

Part 2: Create an Engaging Instructional Power Point Presentation.

All graphics and features must be visible and working.

Unmet elements will result in the deduction of points from your total score.

Submission:

Post both of your activities in two separate html files to your FTP folder (Part 1 and Part 2), create a link to the files on your index page, and send your instructor an email notification containing a working hyperlink to the assignments (not to your index page) and the assignment files’ URL.
