Activity Module
Internet Sites Concerning Audio Downloads
Objective:
Students will know how to find, access and download music
off the Internet.
Objective:
Students will be able to create a CD for instructional purposes
or create a database of files on the hard drive.
Introduction:
Lectures, dittos and textbooks do not always provide the
insight to the culture of the era that you are studying. Also, they
can sometimes fail in capturing our undivided attention. For example,
can you understand the 1960s/1970s public opinion better by reading a textbook
or listening to the words of Joan Baez's "Blowing in the Wind" or John
Lennon's "Give Peace a Chance"? Not to devalue the importance of reading
and the knowledge that can be obtained through the activity. Music,
literature and the arts provide a look inside to the minds of the people from
many years ago. Imagine being able to have the accessibility to have
your students listen to FDR's "Fireside Chats" and JFK's "Inaugural Address."
The Internet has numerous sites dedicated to the downloading of free
software, including sites that allow you to download songs or audio bites.
There are many sites out there that provide free access and downloads
and others that charge a nominal fee.
Activity:
Using the sites listed below or those available audio streams
that play music or have content of interest to you. What you want to do is
learn how to access and navigate through the many, sometimes overwhelming,
choices provided. Your job is to find sites that you like and want to go
back to in the future. Explore through different sites and compile
a data base of songs, compositions and other audio clips that are relevant
to your content area or curriculum.
You may use these sites to complete this activity:
www.kazaa.com
- This is a great site with lots of available downloads. It
is an information sharing site meaning users share files between one another.
So for a stream to be available, one of the logged-in members must have
it in their database.
www.bearshare.com
- I have less experience with this site but from the reviews
I have read and heard it is dependable.
Assignment:
Explore the Internet and download audio files. If your system
has the ability, burn a CD and submit it to your instructor. This
CD should have a theme that could be used in a classroom for instruction
purposes. If your system does not have the ability to burn CDs then
compile a list of audio files and post it on your web page as an attachment.
