Required Assignments

*       Journal Article Review – A summary of and response to an article on selecting software retrieved from the online professional journal American School Board Journal. The article maps out a complex selection and evaluation process for the purchase of software that is most relevant to the school district officials and information technology staff responsible for making these purchases. http://www2.mcdaniel.edu/slm/student/moss-phama/journal.htm

*       Online Course Module: The Ethics of Plagiarism – An online course module designed for instructors of high school or college students, this module focuses on the ethical dimensions of plagiarism. It is premised on the belief that too much of our instruction on this topic does not engage students at a deep, philosophical level, confining itself instead to a dry, technical, preachy level of discourse that seldom has a profound impact. This module features one required and two optional activities that involve listening to talk shows on this topic originally aired on National Public Radio’s Talk of the Nation. http://www2.mcdaniel.edu/slm/student/moss-phama/module.htm

*       Search Engines – An annotated list of my favorite search engines in the following five categories: major or general; shopping; kid-friendly; medical and legal. Favorite search engines were selected based on ease of use, relevance and abundance of results, attractive layout, and reliability of information. The descriptions of the search engines included in my list would be useful to educators and members of the general public who have children, an obsession with finding out about products prior to purchasing them, and medical or legal questions.

The bibliography is divided into five sections:  Harlem Renaissance: Background & Context; Art in the Harlem Renaissance; Biography: Major Figures of the Harlem Renaissance; Jazz in the Harlem Renaissance, and Literature of the Harlem Renaissance with several relevant website recommendations for each. The bibliography will be useful to both faculty and students at the high school level who seek to become knowledgeable on this era and its notable figures. http://www2.mcdaniel.edu/slm/student/moss-phama/harlembb.htm

*       Web Dropin 1: Internet Safety – An online activity for high school students that asks them to visit two excellent websites on internet safety. What is a little bit different about this activity is that it asks students to assume the perspective of adults (namely, their parents) by directing them to read information written for parents concerned about their children’s safety on the Internet. It also asks students to construct a Parent/Child Internet Use Agreement that they consider fair and sensible based on what they have learned about the dangers of the Internet. http://www2.mcdaniel.edu/slm/student/moss-phama/dropin1.htm

*       Web Dropin 2: Protecting Yourself Against Computer Viruses – An online activity for high school students designed to teach them what types of computer viruses exist; how to check on the validity or existence of a computer virus, and what measures to take in order to protect themselves from such viruses.  Students are then asked to create a chart detailing this information. The student who creates the best chart will earn 2-5 SSL (Student Service Learning) hours and have his/her chart displayed throughout the school in classrooms equipped with computers.

Students are directed to listen to two radio shows on the topic originally aired on National Public Radio’s Talk of the Nation, to read several online articles and/or documents relating to this topic, and to write a position paper in which they respond to the assertion that plagiarism at the high school level should be dealt with severely.
