Designing My Web Site Elective

3/3/02

I have read the article titled, “Tis a Gift to Be Simple,” and I looked at various school web sites.  I liked Thurgood Marshall Elementary, Wayside Elementary, and Calvert Elementary in Maryland, and I liked Conewago Township and Barclay Elementary in Pennsylvania.  My school is just beginning to develop its own web site, and I definitely want to have a Media link.  The three primary objectives of a school library web site should be research to coincide with curriculum, literature promotion and assistance in gaining information literacy skills.  In that regard, Conewago is an outstanding example.  The media specialist links to grade levels, search tools, reference sources, teacher resources and other schools.  She offers her own email address to contact her.  Barclay and Thurgood list collection statistics, which I like because I believe media specialists need to toot their own horns about their services.  Barclay links to grade levels and student works.  Literature links are missing from Conewago and Barclay, which surprises me.  Wayside includes library policies and a newsletter.  Wayside and Calvert have many good literature links in addition to the reference links.  I like the photos on Conewago’s site, and I like the pull-down menus on Wayside’s.

Here is what I want to include.

- the Media Mission Statement that was developed by my fourth and fifth graders.

“Our Media Center focuses on providing skills and technology to do research and encourages students to enjoy authors and books in order to become better readers.”

- a link to the State Media Outcomes

- parent information such as when book exchange occurs, class schedules, Smiley Rules
