GRADE 5 JUNIOR AUTHORS AND ILLUSTRATORS

 

 

                                                                      

 

You will use an online reference source to locate information on authors in celebration of Black History Month and Women’s History Month.  First click on the following link –

 http://hwwilsonweb.com/.

 

You may need to type in your user name, AVQ04, and your password, EAMD086439.  Please note that only Carroll County Public School students have permission to access this account.

 

1.        After you have typed in your user name and password, click on the words “Log in.”

 

2.        Click on the words “Search Plus.”You will change the settings of your search request by using the pull down menus.

 

            Genres: Children’s Writers

            Place of Origin: United States

            Gender: Female

            Ethnic Background: African Americans

 

3.        Click Search Now.

 

4.        You should see a list of authors/illustrators within the designated parameters.  Choose an author whose update is 1999 or more recent.  Click on the author’s name and read the biographical information.  Create a tree map, placing the author’s name at the top and taking notes as you read about the author.

 

5.        If you are given a choice to find MORE INFORMATION or MORE IMAGES, click on those words and continue taking notes.  You will see a list of books written by the author with reviews.  Choose one and read a review.

 

6.        Go back to your main search page and again use your pull down menus to change the settings.

            Genre: Any

            Place of Origin: United States

            Gender: Either

            Ethnic: All

            Change the date to your birth date (month, day) and leave the year blank.

            Click on Search Now and find an author who shares the same birthday.

 

7.        You should have a completed tree map and be ready to share your information with the group.
