Lesson Plans There are many sites that provide lesson plans for teachers in all grade levels and subjects. I have provided a few sites with lesson plans for a fourth grade classroom. Collaboration Having students work together to solve a problem or interact with students in another classroom is a great way for students to learn how to collaborate and solve a problem. Keypals Emails are a great communication tool in the classroom. They allow students to visit and learn form other students around the world. Instructional Activities

 

Drop-In #1  Explore Native Americans in Maryland. We begin with the Piscataway tribe to learn how they adapted to their changing environment over the years as civilization evolved. http://www2.mcdaniel.edu/slm/student/maloneyw/webdrop1.htm

 

Drop-In #2  We continue our journey in discovering how the Native American adapted to his environment by exploring the Nanticoke tribe. This drop-in will examine their hunting rituals, their seasons, and the roles of the family members in the tribe, and Native American vocabulary. http://www2.mcdaniel.edu/slm/student/maloneyw/webdrop2.htm

 

Drop-In #3 Captain John Smith came to America to take part in colonization of the New World. He explored the Chesapeake Bay region and constructed maps showing the tribe settlements. Drop-In #4 Students will explore two of the Native American regions, the Eastern Woodland and the Northwest Coastal. They will visit several sites to locate information about these two regions and compare and contrast different aspects of Native American life. http://www2.mcdaniel.edu/slm/student/maloneyw/webdrop4.htm

 

Drop-In #5  Two nations existed within the Native American Eastern Woodland Region. The nations were the Algonquin and Iroquois. Students will visit sites and research information about these two nations and use a Double Bubble Thinking Map to assist in comprehending the differences of these two cultures. http://www2.mcdaniel.edu/slm/student/maloneyw/webdrop5.htm

 

Web Quest Students learn about the 3 early English Settlements to the New World. They will become reporters and investigate why the Roanoke Colony did not thrive. They will then research Jamestown and Plymouth, comparing and contrasting the two settlements. From their findings they will determine what Roanoke could have changed to become a successful settlement.
