Translation Websites

In today’s world, the idea of people being “a world away” is starting to break down. With the creation of the internet, email, cell phones, faxes, video phones, and many other technological tools, the other side of the world is not that far away. One thing hasn’t changed though: hundreds of different languages. To help ease the communications between cultures, several websites have been created to take care of the translation process for you, no charge.

Situations that Translation would be a helpful tool:

1. Collaborative Online Projects that involve students from other countries.

2. Having/Hosting a foreign exchange student in your classroom

3. Teaching E.S.L. students who are having trouble with English text. You can have the text translated into their native language.

4. When studying culturally diverse material, it is always helpful to be authentic and submerse the students into the full feeling of the culture.

5. I took several Spanish courses in my undergraduate program and one day I was walking to Spanish class when I realized that I had short essay response due that day. I can honestly say AltaVista was lifesaver and helped me get a B in the class!

Sample Text – This is an essay response I wrote when applying for a Scholarship available through the Deaf Education Department at McDaniel College.

English:

After I complete my degree at McDaniel College, I plan on working with hearing families with young Deaf children on a one on one basis. My purpose would be with helping the parents understand their new arrival and the implications that come with having a Deaf child. I am a strong advocate for keeping Deaf children free from cochlear implants and allowing that decision to be made by the Deaf individual once he/she understands Deaf culture and the real world consequences of a cochlear implant. I would work with the family in learning sign language and being culturally open and accepting of new influences and life changes. The Deaf child in the family should remain a family member and not be segregated by communication barriers and cultural conflicts. An ideal profession would consist of consulting different professionals within the Deaf community and being a bridge between the hearing family with a new Deaf member and the rest of the Deaf world.

Après qu'I accomplissent mon degré à l'université de McDaniel, je projette sur travailler avec des familles d'audition avec de jeunes enfants sourds sur celui sur une base. Mon but serait avec aider les parents comprennent leur nouvelle arrivée et les implications qui viennent avec avoir un enfant sourd. Je suis un avocat fort pour maintenir les enfants sourds libres des implants cochléaires et permettre à cette décision d'être fait par l'individu sourd une fois que he/she comprend la culture sourde et les vraies conséquences du monde d'un implant cochléaire. Je travaillerais avec la famille dans la langue d'étude et être culturelement ouvert et accepter de signe de nouveaux influences et changements de la vie. L'enfant sourd dans la famille devrait rester un membre de famille et ne pas être isolé par des barrières de communication et des conflits culturels. Une profession idéale se composerait consulter différents professionnels au sein de la communauté sourde et être un pont entre la famille d'audition avec un nouveau membre sourd et le reste du monde sourd.

Después de que I termine mi grado en la universidad de McDaniel, planeo en el trabajo con las familias de la audiencia con los niños sordos jóvenes en el que esta' sobre una base. Mi propósito estaría con ayudar a los padres entiende su nueva llegada y las implicaciones que vienen con tener un niño sordo. Soy abogado fuerte para mantener a niños sordos libres de implantes cocleares y permitir que esa decisión sea hecha por el individuo sordo una vez que he/she entienda la cultura sorda y las consecuencias verdaderas del mundo de un implante coclear. Trabajaría con la familia en lengua y estar cultural abierto y aceptar de la muestra que aprende de nuevos influencias y cambios de la vida. El niño sordo en la familia debe seguir siendo un miembro de la familia y no ser segregado por las barreras de la comunicación y los conflictos culturales. Una profesión ideal consistiría en el consultar de diversos profesionales dentro de la comunidad sorda y el ser un puente entre la familia de la audiencia con un nuevo miembro sordo y el resto del mundo sordo.
