Budgeting

Objective: Students will be able to incorporate instructional elements relative to the lesson

Objective: Students will be able identify three budgeting websites that provide quality instructional suggestions on how to budget income, outgo, and savings.

Introduction: America is in debt. It’s a fact of life these days that as students come out of college, get set up, buy a house, buy a car, and start a family, they are digging a financial hole that rivals no other. Our society is a “must have it now” society that believes in the credit card among all else.

It is essential that we prepare this generation and the next with the tools of living within their means. A corporate CEO will have more flexibility in their expenditures than a high school art teacher, and she will have more flexibility than a part time grocery store clerk.

Activity: Visit the sites provided below and review the different approaches to budgeting. Explore these sites and familiarize yourself with three online budgeting methods and suggestions for proper money management

Assignment: Make an annotated bibliography of three different websites dedicated to money management and budgeting. If you have discovered other websites besides the previously listed, by all means, add them to your assignment. In addition to the bibliography, use one of the systems suggested on these sites to manage one month’s income. Use a realistic, but imaginary, income amount and try to see how you would choose to spend it, save it, etc. For the purposes of the assignment, please keep your monthly income under $5,000. Please document where the money goes in a table formatted page. Suggestions for column headings would be: rent, utilities, cell phone, food, entertainment, car expenses (gas, maintenance), clothes, and savings.

Submission: Post your worksheets to the EdRunner digital drop box and label it “Budgeting." Remember to always send an email to Ms. Lutz notifying her that you have completed your assignment. As a safety precaution, attach a copy of your budgeting assignment to the email notification.
